A There are parking costs and one of these costs is the parking fee. We looked at the municipal surface parking charges in Budapest and four other major Hungarian cities. We were curious to see what the differences are compared to the capital of Hungary and between east and west.
Budapest stands out among Hungarian cities, both in terms of population (1 756 000) and road traffic. Not surprisingly, parking is the most expensive of the cities surveyed, although there are even more expensive parking zones in the country. A in the capital from 2022.09.05 4 parking zones instead of the previous 27. The most expensive is 600 HUF and is typically charged between 8:00 and 22:00. The second zone charges 450 HUF and is available between 8:00 and 20:00, the third zone only between 8:00 and 18:00, as is the fourth, but while the former charges 300 HUF, the latter charges 200 HUF. In most of our towns and cities you have to pay until 18:00 or 20:00, although there are exceptions.
Other cities surveyed have populations ranging from 129 000 to 161 000.
Győr, as a major city in the West, is entering the competition with prestigious prizes. Although their most expensive tariff is 520 HUF, zone 2 is only 10 HUF different from Budapest, at 440 HUF. Zone 3, at 320 HUF, is 20 HUF more expensive per hour than Zone 3 in the capital. Zone 4, at 200 HUF, is the same as Budapest's Zone 4.
Pécs and Miskolc have only 2-2 zones. The more expensive ones are also below the Budapest prices by HUF 400 and HUF 440 respectively. The second zone costs 200 and 260 HUF respectively.
Szeged's first zone has the same fare as Budapest's 600 HUF, while the second zone is cheaper at 330 HUF. The third zone charges HUF 230, the fourth only HUF 150. These prices are already below those in Budapest and Győr.
We looked around the major cities we studied to see what the data for smaller towns and cities showed. In this case, the population of the smaller towns varied between 10 000 and 28 000. In the area around Győr, Kapuvár, with a population of 10 000, was examined, where there were 2 parking zones, one with a HUF 350 and one with a HUF 300 parking zone. Siklós, which is of a similar size, has 3 zones with tariffs of 350, 320 and 240 HUF. The castle of Siklós is a national attraction, so perhaps this helps to explain its high price.
In Monor, a town in Pest county with 21 000 inhabitants, there is a HUF 200 zone, and in Mezőkövesd near Miskolc there is a HUF 320 zone. The latter town also has a major tourist attraction, which is a spa, so this may explain the higher price here. In the category of small towns close to Szeged, we found Szentes, where you have to pay for parking, they have one zone, it costs 200 Ft.
In addition to Budapest and Szeged, there is also a 600 HUF first zone in Szombathely and Siófok. But the 600 Ft is only enough for bronze. Tihany has a street where they charge 800 Ft per hour. But even this is exceeded by Székesfehérvár, where in the heart of the old town you have to pay 900 Ft an hour, day and night.
Overall, we can see that most of our rural metropolitan areas are cheaper than the capital. The price difference between the municipalities is not necessarily due to their geographical location, although to the eye the western cities appear to be slightly more expensive overall, but more important is the tourist attraction and the traffic generated, which can make a big difference even for smaller municipalities. However, parking is generally cheaper in small, quiet towns than in nearby cities or in smaller towns with a high tourist potential.
